The title of this thread has no other significance other than being a cool Pink Floyd song. __________________
So, the wife and I have been in New Haven for five years now (moved up from the Tampa Bay area of FL) and still have yet to really find a gauge for the CT scene. We occasionally go to Bar but we've never caught a band playing - bad timing or wrong day of the week. We hear that Cafe Nine has good original band nights - what day is best to go?
Really, what I would like this thread to be about is - what do you guys listen to and/or like to play?
Myself - I like mid-seventies Glam like T-Rex, Bowie, and Lou Reed. I am also a huge Stones and Beatles fan - as well as having a big collection of Floyd and early Zep. I mostly listen to Euro bands like - Radiohead, Kent, Supergrass, Super Furry Animals, the Magic Numbers, Oasis, Elbow, The Raveonettes, The Hives, Wolfmother, etc. Additionally, I'm a Gen X survivor so I often indulge in Sound Garden, Nirvana, and the folks that came out of that genre - Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters, etc. Also from my era, I love dark bands like Ministry, Skinny Puppy, Type O Negative, Sisters of Mercy, Fields of Nephlim, White Zombie, Andrew WK, etc.
But that's me... how 'bout you?

Hey, welcome to the site! You'll find a pretty diverse group here. I'm into just about everything. My current band is a cover band playing mostly 80's rock and pop but current stuff as well. You can check us out here www.bigfloppydisk.comI'm not sure where the best place to catch live original music is anymore. I know The Webster and Toads always have great shows. But for smaller shows, you'll have to ask the other guys here. As I said, I've been focusing on the cover side of things for a while now. I'm glad to see another Andrew WK fan here. I usually get laughed at for liking him, haha. But his stuff is awesome. Heavy party music, can't beat it.

Like John, I too am in a cover band, and we play all sorts of danceable, grooveable party type music. You can check us out at www.thegroovejunkies.com As far as personal tastes in music, I pretty much love jam type bands, but I also like heavier bands too. I like everything except rap, country and screamo stuff. Bands I enjoy include The Allman Brothers, Phish, Lynard Skynard, Journey, Queen, Foreigner, Pink Floyd, Joe Walsh and the James Gang, AC/DC, a little Zepplin, some Grateful Dead, oh there's too many to list... As far as places to see good original music, I was just at The Acoustic Cafe in Bridgeport (on Fairfield Ave) and saw two amazing original bands. According to their website, "The Acoustic Cafe has recently won "Best Place to hear Local Music", "Best Open Mic", and "Best Place to Hear Alternative Music" by Fairfield County Weekly's reader poll." www.acousticafe.com/The two bands I saw were: Styrocultural Antidote www.nocheez.com/saband.htmThe Apple Pirates www.myspace.com/theapplepiratesmatey

Thanks guys. I've never been in a cover band but have been thinking about starting one a lot lately. The last two years at work has been extremely demanding and has successfully sucked ever ounce of creativity from my soul and I just want to play... without coming up with catchy hooks or clever lyrics. You know? I just want to play songs that are fun to play and... have fun again. Wat are you guy's approach and ideology regarding cover bands? Do you play songs that "you" like to play or do you create set lists with songs that you think people want to hear? Or both... "both" is a good answer too.

We mix it up. We do songs that are "crowd pleasers" but also try to stick to songs that are fun to play, too. Even though the same songs over and over may seem to get tiring, seeing a crowd loving it makes it fun to play. I'll shut off Living On A Prayer on the radio, but I love playing it live.

I'm just starting to scratch the surface and trying to wedge myself in to the CT music scene, but the more I look in to it, the more it seems it's kind of spread out all over the place. New Haven has Toad's and Cafe 9, both of which are known for having good shows. Then there's the Hartford scene, they have The Webster, and other small venues dotting the city. And there's little niches everywhere that overlap a lot.
