Expand your horizons. Come down to the most unique and talked about open mics in the state. Book your band 1 month in advance to play a 45min. set along with two other bands, and get paid. Acoustic performers welcome too. Any genre, any style(with the exception of death metal and screamo) Free promotions and limited free drinks for bands. Ignore all the bull crap. This open mic has a cool vibe, no pressure, a good chance to network and a supportive management. Yes, there is incentive to bring people and there is a cover charge. The band or performer that brings the most people will recieve half of the money collected at the door. The other two acts split. Other implications may apply(ie. performers who weren't booked in advance will not recieve any part of the collection and may not even get a chance to perform)Give me a call to arrange something.

I think we need to talk about the definition of "open mic." " performers who weren't booked in advance will not recieve any part of the collection and may not even get a chance to perform" If you are booking in advance and paying people, that is not an open mic. What you're doing may very well be cool but it's not an open mic. edit: And cover charges are not usually associated with open mics. edit #2: I'm not trying to a jerk but you should stop calling it an open mic. You are booking bands like any other bar (which is perfectly fine). I'm honestly just trying to be helpful. Your club has taken a lot of heat.

It is still technically an open mic because at the beginning or end of every show there is more times than not when a regular takes the stage with a buddy of his who happens to play drums and they jam for 15 min. I got a guy that shows up with a harmonica from time to time, unannounced and he plays with one of the bands or someone else or whatever. It's very open, even when there are bands booked. I make it work. Thank you though for questioning my system. It actually is helpful in case I didn't think of something. And the Acoustic Cafe in Bridgeport charges $3 or $4 on Tuesday open mic night. There are more places too that charge a cover. I used to travel the circuit of open mics performing myself. Besides, if you're going to see 3 bands I don't think $3 is too much to ask. I also run weekly drink specials to help out the patrons. If I know what they like to drink, I'll throw them a bone. Plus, I comp people too.

So basically it's part open mic, part live show? That's actually a cool concept. A live show with 3 bands, and if you want, you can jam too for a bit.

If you are booking bands a month in advance and paying them money to play, that is not an open mic. When you say "come check out our great open mic," people will have the impression that they can show up with their guitar and sign up for a slot to play (that is how 99.9% of open mics work).
I think you should consider this advice because so far your approach has not won great acclaim on craigslist or this website.
You are "booking" bands a month in advance. That couldn't be farther from an open mic. No offense.

In George's II's defense, when I did my open mic, we would line up bands ahead of time too. Nothing worse than having an open mic and not being sure if anyone would come out. However, this does seem to be more of a Thursday night live showcase than an open mic. I like the concept of half and half. Maybe one headlining act for an hour or so and the rest of the night have it be open for anyone. Just an idea.

Joe /Georges II,
I just noticed a posting you made on craigslist that you are looking for an act to fill in this Thursday night. Why would you name the band who backed out and their reason?

I don't know, I just thought I would mention who they were because they are pretty well known in New Haven and Waterbury and I wanted people to know that reputable bands/acts were coming to my open mic/showcase or whatever you want to call it. I probably shouldn't have said the reason why they cancelled but then again it's still vague as to why they did and I wanted to let people know that it wasn't something we did to make them cancel. I didn't think it would cause any problems.
