I just wanted to say goodbye to everyone out there. I am leaving the CT/MA music scene behind for the LA music scene. I recently accepted a job in the South Bay area of Los Angeles and will be relocating in about a month so I'm not gone yet.
Good luck to everyone out there and please keep the scene moving. I'll be sure to stop by and say hi if I am in the area.

Yeah, you better keep in touch. And let us know how the scene is out that way.

Definately will do that. From what I've seen, the scene in LA is way overpopulated so I'll be looking into the scene in the surrounding areas as well.

Resurecting an old thread to stop by and say hi. Man, getting going in the LA scene is not for the faint of heart
First there is no place to practice so you have to pretty much rent a lockout or a stall for somewhere between $300 and $1000 a month depending on the size. That covers your rent and electricity.
It's hard to find good musicians, I think due to the overpopultion of bands; man I miss the east coast. Especially Singers, can you say megalomaniacs? I can say tone deaf to some I have heard.
Next there's gigs. Big HUGE difference between clubs and bars. Bars are a bit easier to deal with but way less exposure. Bars also pay little due to splitting with a few bands a night. Gone are the days of playing all night.
Clubs are Ticket based sales for the most part. Looking at clobs like The Whiskey you sell a certain number of tickets for a certain amount of money. Gonna have to sell as many as 50 tickets for $50 ea if you want a good time slot. Earlier slots are cheaper. Set times are like a half an hour with 10 minutes to change over between bands. I dunno but I wouldn't pay $50 to see my fav band for 30 minutes but maybe that's just me.
Been going at it for a year and a half now and still not completely settled on who to play with but have been through all of the above.
Wish me luck.

Holy sheepshiite batman! $50 for ONE ticket to see a local band for 30 minutes? Wow, I wouldn't pay that to see any of my favorite national acts for 30 minutes! That's insane! Chalk up one good reason not to move to LA....

Yeah, that's nuts Mike! I remember when I was out in LA last year (when we met up) we saw a few decent local bands at some of the smaller bars. Only bigger club we hit was The Typhoon Saloon to see Metal Skool (Steel Panther). But the strip seemed to be a bit of a nightmare with so many clubs trying to be the next best thing. And then using the bands as a way to profit, not the fans. That's not right. But hey, I guess they figure there's plenty of bands that want to play in a famous room, that they'd be willing to shell out for it.
And I guess it's worth it if you have a decent sized fanbase, but it must be tough to get a fanbase having to deal with that stuff as a new band.
Best of luck Mike. I bet you'll find the right fit, you're a good musician. Keep us updated!
