The New Brickyard or the Palace: we ended up playing there recently due to a block party being cancelled, which is not unusual this year. Anyway, the first floor is all changed around and the second floor is still a dance club, but we all care about the third floor I assume. They took out the games and added some couches. The layout is the same and the stage is still there but with two large pedestals for dancers which eats up about 2/3 of the front of the stage, so you have to move around with caution. Other than that, this is an actual working sink (for now) in the bathroom. There was also real soap and paper towels in there too! Though by now I am not sure so don't be mad at me if you experience is different. I still like to play in that room.

That's cool. I really do hope it turns around and becomes a viable live music venue again. Do you know if the Palace has a website?

We're booked there...can't remember the date. I'll check in after the show and let y'all know what went down.
For those who have played there...how is the crowd? Did you have to rely on your own draw??

Hey what's up everyone! Ryan from Catalyst here. We're a new cover band that's been on the scene about 6 months. Just stumbled on this website and I'm glad I found it!
I saw Nervous Habit play at the Palace last weekend, and we're booked for the 25th of this month. My .02 about the place...
I really liked the layout of the band room; it was big, not a ton of seating so people are more inclined to stand and groove, nice bar, pool tables, etc. It has great sound and decent lighting too, which was probably the first thing I noticed.
As far as the crowd goes, a lot of people spill in on the way to the bathrooms from the other parts of the club, so if you have a solid draw of people who are in front of the stage, chances are you'll keep some of the passerbys.
So we're pretty excited to play there! I'll definitely check back into this thread once we have and give and update.

K so we played last night - despite the apparent typhoon outside we had a pretty good crowd. I was talking to the DJ downstairs and he said it's usually WAY more packed than it was but attributed it to the crappy weather.
Anyway its a really fun place to play! Got a good vibe and the stage is fun - two risers on either side that you can stand on and rock out. The guys that work there are awesome and Howard the sound guy knows his stuff. The equipment there is a little lacking though - we had a few issues w/ mics and cables and the such but once we got everything going it was fine.
All in all it was a fun night!

I agree that the Brickyard was a good place to play overall. Yes you have to deal with the stairs but atleast with their house sound system, you don't have to worry about a PA.
Nothing more can be said about the bathroom on the 3rd floor.
I played there back when Johnny was managing and he was great to work with. The guy that came after him (I won't say the name) was less than pleasant and a bit of a challenge to work with. Only played there a couple times after the change.
I was OK with the rock room but my one suggestion would have been to lower the lights in the room so that the stage lights stood out more. I remember it being too bright in there.
With the Pour House and now the Black Bear, (along with places like On the Rocks who seem to be a contender) I don't think Brickyard/Palace will regain what they had, but hopefully with new management it can come back a little.

We played and it was OK. It was kind of a slow night. We played a really hot show and managed to get a few random peeps to stick around. The sound guy is DA BOMB.
Hopefully in the future they find a way to draw some people up there, since the dance section was mobbed.
Overall - staff was great, sound guy was great, place was decent, bathrooms were filthy, stairs sucked, paying for parking sucks. All things taken into account, we would play there again.

That's cool they got a good sound guy in there finally. When it was Brickyard, pretty much every sound guy they ever had was god awful.

Yeah, I hope it does OK. Pour House obviously hurt them and now it seems Black Bear will make a big dent, seeing that they are new and are hosting some of the better local and regional bands.

I'm actually hoping that Black Bear and now Up Or On The Rocks hiring party bands will rejuvenate downtown and start making it a cool place to see live music again.

Ok, so I checked out The Palace last weekend. They finally realized it's time to turn out the bright lights in the rock room. However, who ever set up the lighting for the band has no idea what they're doing. The only lighting on the stage was over the band's heads, shooting up at the ceiling. They could barely be seen on the stage. Then the audience area has tons of lighting on them, all kinds of cheesey DJ type lighting. So basically, the crowd has more light on them than the band. It looks terrible.
On top of that, the sound guy was god awful. Seriously, one of the worst sound guys I've ever heard. He was having all kinds of problems and couldn't figure out any of them. I heard that later in the night he got it together, but from what I heard I can't imagine it sounding much worse. He had so much high end on the kick drum that it was distorting the horns, and literally no bottom end on it. It was as if something wasn't crossed over right, so instead of fixing it, he just kept pushing the volume up to ear piercing levels, ugh. Not to mention there was literally no bass guitar or keyboards in the mix whatsoever. I only stuck around for the 1st set, and like I said I heard he got it together later. Did he just have a bad night/set? Possibly, but it was real off. I shouldn't pass judgement, though, as that's the only time I heard him, and everyone else in this thread seems to think he's good.
They need a lot of work to make that room live up to its potential. But I think they're somewhat moving in the right direction. Get some decent stage lighting and a decent sound guy and the place could rock. Of course, some solid promotion is also needed. I barely ever hear anything on the radio or in print about the place.
Meanwhile, Black Bear down the street is mobbed every night. I've been there quite a bit and I have to say that they definitely know what they're doing. Such an awesome vibe in that room.
